Dental Diseases and Occlusal Problems

"Monkey face" the upper jaw is behind the lower jaw.  This can lead to abnormalilties in tooth allignment resulting in the need for dental cleanings.  Some of the conditions can be corrected when the pet is young, if the pet hasthe genetic ability for normal jaw growth.

Animals that do not receive complete oral health assessments and treatments periodically will have gum erosions and exposure of the roots seen here.  These exposed roots can lead to more bone loss which can cause the loss of the tooth.  This is why many pets loose teeth.

Fracture of the canine teeth, as seen here, can cause abscess and loss of the canine.  Most often these frctured teeth can be painful.  Treatment may involve Root Canal therapy, Vital pulpotomy (cavity type restoration) or extraction.  Do not allow you dog to chew ice, play with tennis balls, tug of war, or chew hard objects such as stones, sticks, or catch baseballs.
